"Hidden Treasures"
The exhibition ended on July 11th, 2013.
There was a catalog signing and walk through tour as well. Catalogs are available through the Museum Gift Shop.

The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, North Carolina. The exhibition of books and magazines illustrated, designed or authored by William Edward Bloomfield Starkweather, was from March through July 2013. This was the first major exhibition of the books as a collection and a first for the Museum. The books are from the Golden Age of Book Illustration in America and represent over 45 authors. Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Allen, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle are a few of the famous authors. The book written before Peter Pan, the book written before Tarzan and the books written before Sherlock Holmes are part of this collection 80 book collection. The Hickory Museum has an excellent catalog available for sale of the entire exhibition with color images of the books and statements about the artist, authors and history of the Golden Age of Book Binding in America.

There are over 80 books and 11 magazines in this exhibition which show the unique talents of the artist William Starkweather.
Many of the books were designed for the publisher R.F. Fenno and company. Some were for Grosset and Dunlap and F.M. Buckles and Co.
The collection unlocks the secrets of "Hidden Treasures" and shows a range of books from 1874 to 1910.

The Hickory Museum of Art also has an excellent collection of 10 William E.B. Starkweather paintings in their permanent collection and they have been on exhibit in the Paul Whitener Gallery through July 2013.
