William Edward Bloomfield Starkweather, 1879-1969, was an American Impressionist painter. This
is a link to a photograph of William Starkweather from one of 60 Starkweather images in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection
Starkweather was a student and friend of Joaquin Sorolla in Spain and a student of John Henry Twachtman, Kenyon Cox and J. Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League in New York
City. Edward Hopper was Starkweather's neighbor and painting friend in Washington Square Park,
NYC, NY. Among Starkweather's many students are Luigi Lucioni, Paul Cadmus, Wilford Conrow, Carl Pfeufer and the Canadian artist Betty Dimock.
Many of the paintings are from New York, Maine, Canada and Italy. Mr. Starkweather was very active in bringing an artists colony to Brooklyn from Washington Square in Manhattan. In
the 30's he was considered to be the Dean of the Brooklyn Artists Colony and was quoted in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, on Friday, March 5, 1937 for his belief.
